A 1 Classroom Management and Discipline Presenter(s): Karen Anne Donner, Retired Teacher
Many ideas on how to manage the daily routine and physical plant of the classroom will be shared with participants. Participants will have the opportunity to ask questions about their own situation and how best to handle challenges. They will receive a packet of information, ideas and suggestions on how to maintain discipline in order to teach. Topics to be discussed include seating arrangements, dealing with overactive students, and ideas on grading to name a few.

In this hands-on workshop, the participants will learn a variety of techniques to present instruction in the target language from day one while maintaining the active engagement of the students. These techniques will address a variety of learning modalities and appeal to a diverse student population. This workshop will be especially interesting to teachers of first and second year classes.

B 1 College Board-Endorsed AP Japanese Language and Culture Workshop Presenter(s): TBA This is a unique opportunity to teachers of Japanese to become acquainted with the College Board’s AP Japanese Language and Culture Exam and course framework. This College Board-endorsed workshop is not being offered anywhere else in California this academic year (2011-2012). Please check CLTA’s website (clta.net) for updated information concerning this workshop.
B 2 College Board-Endorsed AP Spanish Literature and Culture Workshop Presenter(s): TBA Here’s your opportunity to get a heads-up on the revised AP Spanish Literature and Culture Exam which will be administered in April 2013. This workshop, endorsed by the College Board, will provide participants information about the revisions including a reduction in the number of required readings, alignment with national standards, emphasis on contextual analysis, focus on engaging students in cultural contexts through the use of media, development of proficiency in interpretive listening and the incorporation of a thematic approach. Teachers of AP Spanish Literature and Culture will be required to submit a syllabus for course authorization sometime during the 2012-2013 academic year. B 3 Creating Digital Talking Books in any Language Presenter(s): M. Trevor Shanklin, Director, LARC Language Labs, San Diego State University Create your own digital talking book every word and/or sentence is highlighted as the text is spoken. This works on mobile devices and on a Daisy reader on your desktop. Make your texts come alive for your students! NB: Participants in this workshop will need to bring their own laptop with a trial version (valid for one month only) of Dolphin Publisher (runs on Windows platform only) already downloaded; texts they wish to convert to a digital talking book and either audio files or a USB headset and microphone; an iPod, iPad or iPhone, if available, onto which they can upload the files they have created on the laptop.

Friday, March 16, 2012 Half-Day Workshops, Session I 8:00 11:00 am C 1 Embedding Culture in the World Language Curriculum Presenter(s): Ruth Ward, Natomas High School Do you find your students’ understanding of culture vital to their grasp of the world language you are teaching them? Explore how to integrate the culture standard in your curriculum by including the products, practices, and perspectives of your target countries in your short-term and long-term classroom activities. Examples of projects for all levels, beginning through advanced, will be presented and discussed.
C 2 Los derechos humanos Presenter(s): Deborah B. Forster, Redondo Union High School Teachers will be shown how to implement this thematic unit, Los derechos humanos (Human Rights) designed especially to address all the components of the AP Spanish Language Exam. The presentation will address all areas included in the examination: aural/oral skills, reading comprehension, grammar and composition. Participants in the workshop will receive all materials presented as well as suggestions for implementation.
C 3 ¡Olé - La corrida de toros! Presenter(s): Carolyn L. Moir, NBCT, Pioneer Valley High School This workshop on the corrida is in response to requests of previous participants. The presenter will show you how she uses authentic materials and actual bullfight realia to make it come to life for the students. It is a super school starter or a break from all of the usual activities. It is appropriate for advanced levels (3 or 4). Participants will receive all the copies to create their own unit including materials the presenter gathered last summer in Spain. Take it home and use it next week!
C 4 ACTFL Guidelines and Their Concrete Applications for Instruction, Materials and Assessment Presenter(s): Donna Hertz, Monterey Institute of International Studies Gain a concrete understanding of the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines (Novice through Advanced-low) and the implications for daily teaching practices, materials development and ongoing, uncomplicated assessment. This presentation is based on experience with immersion students in summer programs at the Monterey Institute of International Studies and 30 years of teaching with the ACTFL Guidelines and content-area curriculum.
C 5 Apples and Apps in the World Language 21st Century Classroom: Using iPads to Enrich Foreign Language Learning Presenter(s): Kelly Morphy, Bel Aire Elementary School; Molly Malone, Bel Aire Elementary School This workshop will focus on using a wide spectrum of iPad apps to enrich foreign language learning in the 21st century classroom. Attendees will learn tips and tricks to create vibrant and dynamic online tutorials and lessons using many different multimedia technologies as well as the best iPad apps for foreign language learning. NB: Participants will need to bring their iPads with the appropriate apps pre-installed. Apps needed: iMovie, iTunes, GarageBand, QuickTime Player, Pages, Show Me, Drop Box, Toontastic, Explain Everything, Magic Chalkboard, Red Apple, Scruffy Kitty, Milly Molly and the Bike Ride.
C 6 A Taste of France in the Americas: Discovering the Cultures of French Citizens of the Americas Presenter(s): Rose Marie Kuhn, California State University, Fresno You probably know of the French islands of Martinique and Guadeloupe. Did you know that there are other French territories in the Americas? How about Saint-Pierre and Miquelon or ...? This workshop will include an introduction to the DOM, COM and ROM of France... or (almost) everything you wanted to know about these French overseas territories in a nutshell: language, culture, history, people, politics, cuisine and so much more!
C 7 Let’s Read! Using Mini-Novels for Comprehensible Input and Cultural Exploration Presenter(s): Shari Kaulig, Los Alamitos High School; Lynda Fine, Los Alamitos High School Mini-novels are a rich source of input. Participants will work collaboratively to create a plan for teaching a mini-novel for level 1, 2, or 3 in Spanish or French. Plans will include vocabulary development with a focus on storytelling as input, effective literacy strategies, and cultural exploration using the novels as a jumping off point. Each participant will leave the session with a detailed plan for teaching a mini-novel. Presenters will provide concrete examples of various strategies.

Friday, March 16, 2012 Half-Day Workshops, Session II 12 noon 3:00 pm D 1 Language 4 All Presenter(s): Lina Kholaki, California State University, San Bernardino This workshop is designed for teachers in any foreign language class faced with different levels of language among their students, including those who are heritage learners as well as non-native speakers. The presenter will share and exchange differentiated instructional strategies that address the needs of different levels of learners in one class.
D 2 A New Beginning to Using Films in the Classroom Presenter(s): Susan DeLateur, Highland High School Who ever knew “The Lion King” or “Bambi” could be used in the language classroom setting? Have you wanted to do more than tell the students to write down cognates? Then, this is the workshop for you! Create your own engaging assessments to be used with popular films many of your students have seen. NB: Participants in this workshop will need to bring their own laptops capable of playing DVDs, a USB drive for sharing and one DVD of their choosing which can be played in French or Spanish and has subtitles in French or Spanish.
D 3 La familia: la literatura hispana, la historia oral, la investigación genealógica y el relato de tu familia Presenter(s): Maria Cecilia Ruiz,University of San Diego In this workshop the presenter will show participants how she developed a culture and composition class in Spanish using her personal experiences in genealogy and oral history. Participants will use their own curiosity and knowledge of their family history in order to develop methods for teaching culture and writing compositions.
D 4 El proceso de la escritura Presenter(s): Diego Castrejón, Cabrillo High School, Elizabeth Frayre, Lakewood High School ¿Le gustaría ayudarles a sus estudiantes a escribir efectivamente en la clase de español? Le invitamos a aprender un método efectivo y fácil para desarrollar el proceso de la escritura en todos los niveles. El participante verá varios tipos de escritura como el ensayo, la carta, el diario, los apuntes Cornell y el cuaderno interactivo.
D 5 Podcasting in the World Language Classroom @ Every Level Presenter(s): Terri Salsman de Rodriguex, NBCT, Los Altos High School Participants will have the opportunity to see and experience a variety of podcasts created by students and leave this workshop with enough information to begin podcasting in their classrooms right away. Participants who bring a personal laptop that is capable of connecting to the provided wireless network will be able to create/produce their first podcast!
D 6 Keys to Success: Preparing Students for the AP Spanish Language Exam Presenter(s): Shari Kaulig, Los Alamitos High School; Tina Livingstone, El Dorado High School Students will be successful on the AP Spanish Language exam if they are well prepared. Learn tips for helping students with listening, reading, writing, and speaking from two veteran AP teachers. Participants will have the opportunity to practice the strategies the way their students will in the classroom. They will receive a packet of handouts for classroom use that include graphic organizers, useful phrases and vocabulary, writing and speaking tips, and projects and assignments.
D 7 Conversation and Communication Without End! Activities and Strategies to Keep Students Talking in the Target Language Presenter(s): Cynthia Leathers, Redondo Union High School Learn new ways to encourage target language usage, start conversations and keep students talking to you and each other with personalized activities that build language acquisition and classroom culture. Participants will also be introduced to routines and management tips that support language acquisition at all levels. Activities will include daily chat time, partner work, games and assessment. Come prepared to talk!

Friday, March 16, 2012 Half-Day Workshops, Session III 4:30 7:30 pm E 1 Taller sobre dos obras del nuevo programa de AP Literatura y Cultura Presenter(s): Alberto Gieco, Ramon C. Cortines High School; Ana Estangüi, Hollywood High School Analizaremos dos obras del nuevo programa: El hombre que se convirtió en perro (Osvaldo Dragún) y “Como la vida misma”/”El arrebato” (Rosa Montero). Las presentaciones se realizarán a partir del uso de actividades interactivas, PowerPoints, videos y material auditivo que serán entregados a los participantes al finalizar el taller. Las lecciones incluirán el contexto socio-histórico-cultural en el que las obras fueron concebidas.
E 2 Easy Tea Ceremony for Your Japanese Class: Non-Verbal Communication of Harmony, Respect, and Consideration Presenter(s): Midori McKeon, San Francisco State University It is said that chanoyu (tea ceremony) is essential to understanding Japanese culture. Unfortunately, however, many consider chanoyu too difficult and too complicated to learn. This workshop will present ideas for bringing a simplified, easy chanoyu procedure into a classroom to discover with students how fundamental Japanese values such as harmony, respect, and consideration are expressed in it so eloquently through non-verbal means of communication.
E 3 The Essential Beginning: Coordinated Support for Student Teachers Presenter(s): Sally Mearns, Site Director, Bay Area Foreign Language Project; Elizabeth Matchett, Gunn High School; Hélène Chan, San José State University Calling all existing and potential methods instructors, university supervisors and cooperating/master teachers! Student teachers are the future of our profession. How can the university and the school site intentionally plan and coordinate the student teaching experience? Items for discussion include an overview of teaching standards, credentialing requirements, roles of methods instructors, university supervisors, cooperating teachers as well as coaching, observation and support for teacher candidates.
E 4 Accommodating Different Learning Styles in the Foreign Language Classroom Presenter(s): Hyunsoo Hur, Defense Language Institute, Monterey This workshop explores different learning styles teachers may encounter in the foreign language classrooms. Teachers will inspect characteristics of different learning styles, examine their own as well as analyze students’ learning styles through case studies. As the final outcome, participants will design and share a lesson plan that accommodates a variety of students’ learning styles.
E 5 Developing Writing Skills in Spanish Presenter(s): Virginia Adan-Lifante, University of California, Merced The goal of this workshop is to review different methods to help Spanish language students to be better writers. The presenter will approach writing as a process including pre-writing, writing and reviewing exercises. This workshop will also explore how to use authentic writing and non-writing materials in order to help students understand the different purposes of writing and acquire new vocabulary. Examples for all levels will be included.
E 6 Connecting Teachers and Students to the CA World Language Content Standards Presenter(s): Gail S. Hetler, NBCT, Site Director, East Bay Foreign Language Project; Nancy Salsig, Liberty High School; Gloria Payette, NBCT, Freedom High School Teachers will engage in hands-on activities that will lead to an understanding of the categories and stages of the new California World Language Content Standards and how to apply them to selecting or designing standards-based performance assessments.
E 7 A Workshop on Teaching the English/Chinese Language Through Performance of Literature (aka Readers Theatre) Presenter(s): Peter Y. H. Chen, National Taipei University This workshop is intended for those language teachers who are interested in teaching the English/Chinese language through Performance of Literature (aka Readers Theatre or Chamber Theatre). Two literary texts, written in English and Chinese respectively, will serve as typical examples of the theory and practice of Performance of Literature. Also included will be demonstrations of each of the 16 steps of the instructional sequence.
E 8 Building a Dynamic Website and Blog in the World Language Classroom Presenter(s): Molly Malone, Bel Aire Elementary School; Kelly Morphy, Bel Aire Elementary School This workshop will focus on best practices in building a dynamic website and blog, using iWeb and GarageBand. Teachers will walk away with the ability to create and implement their own website, build a blog to use as a conversation tool with students, create rich language podcasts and imbed iMovies. The examples will be in Spanish but they can be applied to any language. NB: Participants will need to bring their wifi-enabled Apple laptops with the appropriate software installed (iWeb and GarageBand).
E 9 Helping Students Succeed on the First Exam in AP French Language and Culture Presenter(s): Brian Kennelly, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo With the first exam in the revised AP French Language and Culture course just two months away, we will review a practice exam and share techniques to help teachers prepare their students for success. This will be a good review for those who have previously attended a full-day AP French Language and Culture workshop and/or an AP Summer Institute this past year.
E10 Note-Worthy Language: Using Music Meaningfully in the Language Classroom Presenter(s): Nicole Naditz, Bella Vista High School Music builds language. From pre-listening, to guiding students while listening, to creative post-listening activities, to cultural analysis, you’ll leave this session with new ideas for your own music collection. You’ll also receive a URL to freely access and share the complete, award-winning curriculum guide for using music in the language classroom. The presenter won first place in the Jane Ortner Educating Through Music Curriculum Award in 2010 for this curriculum guide which uses music to teach content standards.
