Foreign Languages Are NCLB Core Subjects.
The No Child Left Behind Act of 2001 (Reauthorization of the Elementary & Secondary Education Act of 1994) states, in Title IX General Provisions, Part A, Definitions, Number 11:
"CORE ACADEMIC SUBJECTS- The term core academic subjects means English, reading or language arts, mathematics, science, foreign languages [emphasis added], civics and government, economics, arts, history, and geography." The California Language Teachers Association (CLTA) is an association of language professionals which sponsors activities that promote, support, and enhance the teaching of world languages. Activities include an annual state-wide conference, workshops, publications, a Web site, placement information, representation in Sacramento, recognition of special service to FL education, and much more.
