  2. What are the ingredients that you need? How much?
  3. List measurement and write the meaning in English. (OSAJI, KOSAJI, etc.)

  5. How many steps are needed? Summarize.

     

     

       

D. Reading for Understanding Application

  1. Make a menu for your Sunday dinner (or breakfast, lunch, etc.) using more than two recipes from the site.
  2. Take a note of the recipe using dictionary form.
  3. Make a shopping list of the ingredients, then calculate the budget for your dinner in Yen. Currency converter: http://www.oanda.com/converter/classic
  4. Write a letter to your friend in Japan how the food was, introducing the recipe.

     

     

     

E. Extension

  1. Now write your own recipe in Japanese. Write your recipe in polite form for your presentation.
  2. Write a cooking memo in dictionary form.
  3. Include the name of the dish, the number of people the recipe is for, ingredients, tools, procedure, and a colorful photograph or drawing.
  4. Then make a cooking video. Solo or with a partner.
  5. Bring the dish to class, have a food show and celebrate!

Procedure

  1. Ask students to list what information they expect to find in a recipe.
  2. Ask students to share what information they expect to find.
  3. Have students select a recipe site and find the expected information in the recipe.

  5. Ask students to list words they don't understand and think they need to know. Let students work with a partner to guess the meaning of words they need. Then discuss with class.
  6. Students find information about recipe.
  7. Have students print out the recipe. Teacher pastes these on a sheet of paper without the title/name, and have students give their own unique name for each recipe.
  8. Have students write their own recipe in Japanese.
  9. Have them pair up and practice presenting and assisting. The cooking assistant should ask simple questions about the cooking procedure and ingredients, and say AIZUCHI.
  10. On the final day, students bring both their video and the food. Watch the video presentation, then have a food show. Have half the class present the food they made and the other half go around and taste the food. Switch the roles. Celebrate!
