To help students understand/comprehend the website,
have students look for cognates.
Have students answer the questions in #'s 6-11 for
comprehension checks. Also, make students note the graphics next to questions
7 and 10. These graphics will help them answer the questions, since the
students do not know the vocabulary.
Have students look-up 7 words from the website that
they did not know.
Have students use the dictionary to write the English
translation of those 7 words.
Have students write two differences between Halloween
and Día de los Muertos in a category format.
Extension (You will
choose which of the following the students will complete)
Have students construct an altar by incorporating
7 or more objects.
Have students write and draw what they think their
own altar should look like. (6-7 objects).
Have students imagine that they are a spirit. They
must write about their thoughts and feelings after celebrating Día
de los Muertos.
Have students draw and dedicate two sugar skulls
to whomever they would like.
Have students compare Halloween and el Día
de los Muertos using a Venn Diagram.

El Día de los Muertos
El Día de los Muertos is an emotional celebration
in Mexico that takes place around the same time as Halloween. Although it
is a celebration that involves a lot of fun and diversion, it also focuses
on memories of family members that have passed away. The most important
aspect of studying this celebration is to learn about the Mexican's view
of death and remembrance.
In this activity we will be visiting a web site about
el Día de los Muertos in Mexico.
