In this activity we will be visiting web sites for weather conditions in the various capitals of Spanish Speaking countries in South America.
A. Pre-reading - Using prior knowledge
List below the information you would expect to find in a weather report.
B. Scanning
1. Go to the following web site: http://espanol.wunderground.com/global/SA_ST_Index.html
2. Put a check mark in front of the following you find on this page: ______temperature _____humidity ____pressure _____conditions ______events _______cancellations
3. List here Spanish words that are similar to English words.
4. List here words that are not like English but that you understand by context.
5. List some words that you don't understand that you think you need.
C. Reading for Understanding
1 What dates is the weather report for?
2. Now look at the map and the color and temperature graph. Answer the following questions:
a) Which country(ies) has similar temperature to ours today?
b) Which country(ies) has the coldest weather today?
c) Which country(ies) has the warmest weather today?
d) Which country(ies) have the most moderate weather today?
3. How many Spanish-Speaking countries are there in South America? (Find the names under the map and list them here.)
4. Click on one of the Spanish-speaking countires. Select the capital of the country and write down the following information.
Name of the country and its capital . Temperature both in Farenheit and Celcius . Weather conditions
5. Find where you can get information on winds and give the following :
a. Which country or countries have northerly winds?
b. Which country or countries have southernly winds?
c. Which country of countries have easternly winds?
6. Did you find all the information that you expected? Put a check mark beside each item in #1 above that you found. Put an extra X in front of each item you did not find.
7. Repeat #3-5 with three other countries.
D. Extension
1. Make your own weather report in Spanish. Be sure to include the name of the city you are reporting on, its temperature highs and lows, weather conditions, humidity, and air pressure.

1. Ask students to list what information they expect to find in a weather report.
2. Ask students to share what information they expect to find.
3. Have students select a weather site and find the expected information in the report. http://wunderground.com/ Select Spanish language and click on the South America map.
4. To help students find expected information have students look for cognates.
5. Then have students look for meaning in context.
6. Ask students to list words they don't understand and think they need to know. Let students work with a partner to guess the meaning of words they need. Then discuss with class.
7. Students find information about the movies and theaters.
Extension
Have students make their own weather report for their city.
